Set up your Remote Desktop Connection

The first task for those who wish to use RDP is to obtain the name of their WORK computer. The RDP client can be configured to use either the IP Address or the name of your WORK computer. The name must be in the form of a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). This FQDN is a combination of the local PC name and the domain in which it is found.

To find the PC name, click on the Start button and type CMD in the search field (you may have to select RUN to get this field) and press ENTER. In the black screen that pops up, type the "hostname" command to get your computer short name. Next use the nslookup command followed by the short name to get your Fully Qualified name (e.g. nslookup X0573879) and IP address. Record these. This is the value you will use below in Step 2. Following in an example of the output from these commands:

C:\>hostname
2UA21101VA

C:\Windows\system32>nslookup 2UA21101VA
Server: edtn-grid-member-ns1.healthy.bewell.ca
Address: 10.16.228.199      <---- ignore this one

Name: 2UA21101VA.capitalhealth.ca    <---- this is the FQDN
Address: 10.117.6.299        <---- this is the IP Address
